Santa Ana, CA – David H. Yamasaki, a statewide leader in court administration, has been selected as Court Executive Officer of the Superior Court of Orange County. “Mr. Yamasaki’s exceptional experience with court administration in California will be an asset for his leadership role in our Court,” said Presiding Judge Charles Margines. Mr. Yamasaki’s appointment will be effective December 2, 2016.

Mr. Yamasaki has served as the Court Executive Officer of the Superior Court of Santa Clara County since July 2008. Recently, he has been instrumental in the development, planning, and opening of a new Family Justice Center courthouse in San Jose. He has overseen the implementation of a new civil case management system and e-filing for the Superior Court of Santa Clara County. He was also a member of the statewide Trial Court Budget Working Group from 2009 to 2013. Prior to his current position, Mr. Yamasaki served as Assistant Executive Officer of the Superior Court of San Diego County for 10 years.

The Judicial Council of California presented Mr. Yamasaki with its 2015 Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor given by the state court system’s governing body. The award recognizes those who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership and made significant contributions to the administration of justice. The Judicial Council’s announcement stated:

David H. Yamasaki has been a statewide leader in addressing some of the most challenging issues facing the judicial branch. As a Judicial Council member from 2011-2014, and as chair of the council’s Court Executives Advisory Committee for two consecutive years, Mr. Yamasaki was at the forefront of, and continues to be an important contributor to, major policies and strategic initiatives implemented by the courts, including sustainable funding, equal access and procedural fairness, and technology to improve service and operational efficiency.

Mr. Yamasaki holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with an emphasis in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from San Diego State University.

Chief Executive Officer Alan Carlson, who has had a distinguished court management career, including eight years with the Superior Court of Orange County, plans to retire in October 2016.

Organization Description   

The Public Law Center (PLC), Orange County's non-profit pro bono law firm, is committed to providing access to justice for low-income residents. Through volunteers and staff, PLC provides free civil legal services, including counseling, individual representation, community education, and strategic litigation and advocacy to challenge societal injustices.  Now in its 35th year of service, PLC works with more than 1,400 volunteer lawyers, paralegals and law students from throughout the county who volunteer their time and expertise.

Qualifications

• Active membership in the California State Bar; Minimum five (5) years’ experience in the practice of law
• Experience litigating cases in state or federal court, including legal research, writing, negotiation, law and motion, discovery, trial, and appellate work
• Demonstrated ability in the development of strategies to resolve complex problems with a broad impact on the community
• Demonstrated commitment working with volunteer lawyers and law students; experience supervising lawyers and/or law students
• Strong public speaking skills and ability to train a variety of audiences, from clients to pro bono attorneys
• Ability to take initiative and work under pressure with limited supervision
• Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Vietnamese a strong plus
• Must have own transportation, valid CA Driver’s license, and good driving record

Duties and Responsibilities   

• Develop and implement the vision and goals of PLC’s Health Unit, including PLC’s AIDS Legal Assistance Project and PLC’s Medical-Legal Partnership Clinics 
• Supervise  attorney, administrative assistant and law student staff members
• In coordination with the Executive Director develop and execute strategies, including policy advocacy and impact litigation, to resolve health problems with a large impact on the low income community
• Work collaboratively with other PLC substantive units, as well as other legal services providers, community groups, and government officials
• Participate in PLC leadership meetings and regularly contribute to organizational decisions
• Develop local and state policies addressing health issues
• Oversee case referrals and provide support to volunteer attorneys and law students
• Staff, coordinate and supervise  legal clinics and trainings
• Represent PLC at legal networking and community outreach events 
• Full time position; occasional evening and weekend work required
• Other duties as assigned

Salary & Benefits  

• Salary dependent on experience; range $55,000 to $80,000

We are excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for our Critical Race Studies (CRS) Fellowship.  The CRS Fellowship is designed to support the research and professional development of a candidate interested in pursuing a career in law teaching.  As you may already know, CRS is the only program of its kind in the country and is the premier institutional setting for the study of the intersection between race and the law. Anchored by renowned scholars whose research helped found and continues to advance Critical Race Theory in legal scholarship and related disciplines, CRS supports a unique intellectual community for faculty and students, including formal JD and LLM specializations in Critical Race Studies.
 
A CRS Fellowship candidate should possess (or expect to possess by June 30, 2017) a JD, LLM, or equivalent legal training; a strong academic record; excellent analytical and writing skills; and demonstrated interest and background in Critical Race Theory.  For the 2017-18 Fellowship, we now welcome applications from graduates of any law school, though UCLA CRS graduates remain strongly encouraged to apply.

Santa Ana, CA – The Orange County Family Violence Council is presenting a family violence conference, “Identifying, Understanding and Breaking the Cycle of Generational Violence,” on November 4, 2016, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Costa Mesa Neighborhood Community Center, 1845 Park Ave., Costa Mesa, CA 92627. The conference focuses on the effects of family violence and selecting smart strategies to combat harm, as it occurs through all stages of life, from fetus to elder adult.
The curriculum highlights best practices and seeks to reinvigorate those who have dedicated their professional and volunteer time to this important field. The conference features renowned speaker Linda Chamberlain, Ph.D., who is an expert on the impact of early trauma throughout the lifespan, and an inspirational keynote message from a family violence survivor. Other topics include:

• Sorting Out Legal Tools and Resources: Civil, Family, Juvenile, and Criminal
• Elder and Dependent Adult Issues
• Veterans and Their Families
• Effective Treatment of Batterers: Are We Being Successful?

Originally organized at the behest of the California Judicial Council and supported by the Orange County Board of Supervisors, the Orange County Family Violence Council brings together all justice partners involved in every aspect of family violence and its effects upon Orange County families. This collaboration of judges, law enforcement partners, nonprofit agencies, defenders, council, and treatment providers is dedicated to inspiration, education, and sharing smart solutions.
